A lot of players get stuck on the Restrictor Plate Challenge in Forza Horizon 6 because the upgrade does not appear on most normal street cars. The game never clearly explains that you usually need a race-style engine swap before the Restrictor Plate menu becomes available.
After testing a few different methods, the fastest approach is simply buying a cheap compatible car, installing the correct engine swap, and equipping the restrictor plate. The whole process can be finished in just a couple of minutes.
The Quickest Car Setup
The easiest method right now is using the Mazda RX-7 route because the car is cheap and the upgrade path is straightforward.
You can use either the Mazda Savanna RX-7 or the RX-7 Type R. Both work well for this challenge.
Here is the fastest process:
Buy the RX-7 from the Autoshow or Auction House.
Travel to any Horizon Festival site or player house.
Open Upgrades & Tuning.
Select Custom Upgrade.
Move to the Conversion tab.
Choose Engine Swap.
Install the 2.6L 4-Rotor Racing Engine.
Return to the Engine upgrades section.
Scroll to the Restrictor Plate upgrade.
Install any available restrictor plate option.
Save the setup.
As soon as the upgrade is applied, the challenge should complete instantly.
Why Players Get Confused
The biggest problem is that many cars simply do not show the Restrictor Plate category by default. Players often search through the engine menu and assume the feature is bugged.
In reality, the upgrade usually only appears after installing a race-oriented engine swap. Once the swap is installed, the game unlocks additional motorsport tuning parts, including the restrictor plate.
That is why using the RX-7 method is so popular in the community. It skips all the trial-and-error.
Alternative Fast Methods
If you do not want to use the RX-7, there are a couple of other reliable shortcuts.
Honda NSX-R GT Method
The Honda NSX-R GT also works extremely well if you already unlocked it through Barn Finds.
For this version:
Install the 1.6L I4 Turbo Rally engine swap.
Return to the Engine upgrades menu.
Install the Restrictor Plate.
This method is nearly as fast as the RX-7 setup.
Race Car Method
Players with lots of credits can skip engine swaps entirely.
Factory race cars like Subaru WRC models, GT cars, or Formula Drift vehicles already support Restrictor Plate tuning from the start. You can simply buy one, enter the engine menu, and equip the part immediately.
It costs more credits, but it is definitely the fastest one-click solution.
Important Tip Before Saving
Some versions of the challenge tracker may ask you to install a Restrictor Plate, while others may complete when selecting “No Restrictor Plate” after entering the menu.
If the challenge does not trigger immediately, try toggling between the available plate options and saving the build again.
The Restrictor Plate Challenge sounds more complicated than it actually is. The real trick is understanding that the upgrade is hidden behind certain race engine swaps.
For most players, the RX-7 method is still the best overall option because it is cheap, quick, and consistently works. Once you know where the menu is located, the entire challenge takes less than two minutes to finish.
